22 Aug 2023 By Kate Ellis

Starting a new job can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. The initial days in a new work environment often come with a rush of information, new faces, and the need to quickly adapt. To help you feel confident through the transition, we've compiled a list of five tips to help you settle into a new placement.

1. Taking notes on the first day

On your first day at a new company, make sure you are prepared and take a notepad and pen. While it's possible the company might provide these supplies, having your own demonstrates you are organised and eager to understand your responsibilities. During those initial days and weeks, you're likely to take on a lot of new information – from company processes to software systems. By jotting down notes, you'll be better equipped to retain and process the information as well as having notes you can refer to at a later date.

2. Connecting on LinkedIn in the first week

Building a strong professional network is key to your personal and career growth. During your first week at the company, use this as an opportunity to connect with your new colleagues on LinkedIn. This small gesture will increase your professional network and also help you to build a group of colleagues you feel comfortable around. You will also create stronger connections beyond the workplace, allowing you to stay updated on your colleagues' accomplishments and industry insights, which could prove valuable later in your career.

3. Making an effort with colleagues and Managers

The early days at a new job offer prime opportunities to create positive relationships with your colleagues and managers. Be brave and introduce yourself! Expressing your excitement about joining the company sets a welcoming tone and can help you to settle in quickly with your new team. Remember first impressions matter so building connections early on will make it easier for you to approach others for support if you need it.

4. Conscious body language

Your body language might be something you are not aware of however, it speaks volumes about your approachability and confidence. You can have a friendly demeanour by smiling and making eye contact which signal both warmth and approachability. By being mindful of your body language you can significantly influence the quality of your workplace interactions.

5. Relax and unwind after work and during your weekend

Transitioning into a new role can be mentally and emotionally demanding. The learning curve and the pressure to make a strong impression can be overwhelming, so it’s important your take some downtime to relax and unwind. Engaging in activities you enjoy, spending time with loved ones, or simply resting can prevent burnout and help you to contribute positively to the workplace.

By incorporating these five practices during the initial days of a new job can significantly contribute to a smoother transition, help build positive relationships, and set the stage for a successful career within the company.
