Structuring your CV as a temporary worker

23 May 2023 By Kate Ellis

Temping can be a fantastic way to get a taster for working in different roles and industries, however, it can be a challenge to know the right way of structuring this on your CV. I’ve been working within recruitment for over 8 years and lots of my candidates with temporary experience have experienced this challenge. Here are my 3 top tips to help you showcase your temporary assignments.

Where to discuss the number of temporary assignments completed

Depending on the number of temporary placements you have completed you might be worried about your CV starting to look jumpy, but if you are clear on the role being temporary, you have nothing to worry about. Employers understand that temporary work is often for shorter periods so using the profile area of your CV is the best place to address this. For example, ‘Most recently I have undertaken several temporary assignments whilst seeking my next long-term position.’.

How to describe the roles and responsibilities

Be positive about the temporary roles you’ve held; employers will want to see your enthusiasm for developing your career and that they were valuable experiences. Create a short summary on the achievements from each of your temporary assignments to show yourself in the best light. Future employers will want to understand how you were able to adapt to different working environments so make sure you include information about the systems you have learned, the skills you have developed, and the projects you have completed.

Mentioning multiple assignments on your CV

List the temporary roles under one heading if you have completed multiple assignments. This will this make it easier for a hiring manager to digest, separating the temporary roles from the permanent positions you’ve held.

If you have completed multiple temporary assignments within the same company, make sure you expand on this. For example, if you had multiple placements with the same employer whilst you were studying at university, this could be a good indicator of your reliability and how well you fitted into the company’s culture.
