Similarly to retail, people don’t always choose a career in recruitment; in fact most of us seem to ‘fall into’ it. What a lot of people don’t seem to realise is that there are several key skills you use daily as a retail assistant which can be directly transferred to recruitment, making you a successful consultant!

1. Sales Ability - Does ‘traffic stopping’ sound familiar? If yes, then congratulations, you’ve got the retail experience we’re looking for! If not, then that’s ok – Huntress is here to save the day! ‘Traffic stopping’ is what the retail world calls business development and can be roughly described as stopping customers on the shop floor, luring them over to your counter and making a sale. Building rapport and getting customers interested in your product is key to making any kind of sale and recruitment is all about that! You will usually start by making cold calls to companies, building your relationship with them and ultimately making the sale by placing candidates into roles with them.

2. Resilience – As with any sales role, you’re going to get told no, a lot! Admittedly, in some retail environments the sale can be easier. Why would a customer be in store if they weren’t at least considering buying something? Even in cases like those, you still need to upsell and influence consumers to make purchases they hadn’t originally intended to make and this can, as we all know, come with a lot of rejection. When it comes to recruitment, your resilience will pay off as you build your business, place your candidates and make your commission!

3. Hitting Targets – Whether it’s an individual or store target, your drive and determination to make the sale and get your bonus are a huge advantage which puts you a step ahead everyone else when getting into this sales-based industry. Recruitment is a target-driven environment which means that every time you hit those KPIs (key performance indicators), the commission bells chime for you!
